Low Danger Does Not Mean NO Danger.

Please everyone….becareful in the back-country! We are getting into our spring season for back-country skiing and this is the time of year where we tend to get a bit more adventurous in our skiing endeavors.

PLEASE, remember that it is not a game! Making smart choices is critical no matter what the avalanche rating is. Use the same smarts with LOW danger as you would with HIGH. Rapidly warming temperatures during the day could trigger an avalanche just as easily as a big dump!

Unfortunately a young life was lost by an avalanche this past weekend here in the Tetons and all of our deepest warmth and best wishes go out to his family, friends, and wife.

Please…be safe!

Click here for additional information on this avalanche.

Project to Motivate Kids To Get Outside More

Are kids getting further and further away from nature and the outdoors? Many would say “yes”. With the rates of childhood obesity steadily rising we really need to pay attention to this issue. In an attempt to bring awareness to this issue of “Nature Deficit” Coleman has launched the Coleman Everest 5.5 Challange in an attempt to motivate kids to get outside! Denver schoolteacher and mountaineer Mike Haugen, will be departing in May to attempt a summit on Mount Everest. The following is a press release from The Coleman Company that describes this event:

The World's Longest Human Powered Winter Race.

From the title of this blog I bet you are feeling all fired up and are frantically getting ready to go out and train for this one. Why not? The Iditarod Trail Invitational includes 350 miles of biking, running, walking or skiing along the Iditarod trail in Alaska. Yes, some even continue all the way to NOME (1100 miles). The temps have been reaching a balmy -30 but the trail conditions have been fast. These tough athlete’s are mostly self supported with aid stations strategically placed along the way. Must admit that my snow-biking this winter gives me a twinge of excitement about doing this race myself….then reality sets in. Oh well!

The Trials and Tribulations of Being a New Skier!

A few years ago I decided to teach myself how to ski, at the spry old age of 30. Until this point I spent the previous 6 years on a snowboard. The last 3 of those 6 years I spent as a dedicated backcountry snowboarder. Using a Voile split board I ventured into amazing places on a regular basis. Along with the regularity of adventure came the regularity of my potty mouth spewing obscenities …yes, I even made up some of my own words. If you are a splitboarder you know EXACTLY what I mean.

Short Review of Popular Weight Loss Programs

Disclaimer
Womenspecific.com is dedicated to providing all information relating to the outdoor woman. We try to maintain an unbiased look at all aspects of outdoor living. Guest blogs do not always reflect our entire beliefs and thoughts on certain issues.

Dr. William Howard Hay introduced food combining in 1911. His method is based on the theory that there is one underlying cause for health problems and that is the wrong chemical condition in the body. This condition is called acidity, caused by the accumulation of acid during digestion and metabolism in greater amounts than the body can eliminate. Dividing food in three big categories and the understanding of their nutrients can help to keep a balanced diet and a healthy metabolism according to Dr. Hay. Due to his theory although protein and starch foods are acid forming in their end products in the body. They need different conditions for digestion and should never be combined at the same meal.

The Chronicles of a Tote Bag Addict!

I awoke the other morning to what I assumed a usual, routine, start to the day. Get up, feed the dogs (you would think they have never eaten before with the way they whine and dance), make the coffee (ahhh), and look up the avalanche report for the day. Well…I guess the avy report routine has been a bit off due to the little/NO snow we have received this year. Therefore, the next step is to head to my office for a big, productive work day.

When my fiance approached me with this very serious face I new it was time to have a TALK. I sat down and braced myself for the usual life chat we have now and then. I never expected what he was about to tell me. I could have never been prepared….

Human Powered Snowmobile: Getting to the Fresh Turns.

I know I have blabbed about the Surly Puglsey in the past…Changed my life! The low snow that we are experiencing this year forces us to be creative when it comes to finding good ski turns. Much of the closely accessible terrain has been skied out completely. You must go further and further to find those untouched North facing shots (which even those tend to have a track or two down them).

My fiance and I are not ready to join the bubble head world of snowmobiles to find those out of the way treasures. Therefore, this weekend we had our inaugural snow bike approach to ski some new terrain.
