No Pain No Gain.

It is the so-called “off Season” here in the mountains of Jackson Hole. This would be the time of year when cycling is a bit spotty due to colder temps and soggy trails, but the skiing is not quite there. This is the time of year when outdoor enthusiasts start to go a bit stir crazy. Many leave the valley for a bit, but the outdoor fever still hits. This would be the same time of year that for the past 10 years I have considered doing the one thing that really does not slip off my tongue too easily…GO TO THE GYM…..yikes!

Ski Mountaineering in Patagonia: A Ladies Perspective. Part I

Guest Blog from Gale Dahlager (Patagonia, Chile)

Life in Patagonia has been great so far. I’m ready to sell all my possessions and move here! El Chalten is a small town where you can walk from one end to the other in about 10 min, with only restaurants, mountaineering shops, and hostels and hotels. It is very barren, but with amazing huge peaks and glaciers visible everywhere. Apparently is doesn’t snow that much in town, and it doesn’t stay long, but the wind is intense. There are so many huge cliffs all around that are great for climbing, and mountains in all directions with killer ski lines.

Are you GPS savvy? Traversing the Big Hole Mountains for the first time...

My friend Amy and I gave in to her husband’s plan of completing the Big Hole Crest Trail on bike and on foot in opposite directions. The Big Hole Mountains are the northern part of the Snake River Range. They are separated from the Snake River Range by Idaho Highway 31 which leads from Swan Valley, ID up Pine Creek Canyon and over Pine Creek Pass into the Teton Basin and the town of Victor ID. The Western boundary of the Big Hole Mountains and part of the roadless area boundary is the scenic, free-flowing Snake River in a basalt and limestone canyon downstream from Conant Valley. The Big Holes are about 1,000 feet lower than the Snake River Range and not quite as spectacular. There are many trails although upkeep on quite a few is spotty at best. Using his many computer programs, maps, and GPS systems, Forrest calculated the traverse to be about 26 miles. The trail is heavily used in sections but rarely ventured from start to finish. This is mostly due to the fact that the two trailheads are about (2) hours drive apart. From any of the connecting canyons and creeks many loop trips take you back to your car. In sections the trail is faint; some sections even fade out for many steps.

Breast Cancer: Be Aware, Be Knowledgeable.

The scare of breast cancer is one that we hear about daily, but until it hits close to home we tend to forget. My husband just lost his aunt to a long battle against breast cancer. Within the week after her death I strangely received about 10 different emails from various businesses and organizations regarding breast cancer awareness. I admit, that in my busy life, I do forget the reality of this tragic disease. Most of us outdoors women tend to live healthy lifestyles where we might feel that it could not happen to us. We might even write off “just not feeling right” to fatigue or over-stress. Yes, the majority of the time it is just that…but please pay attention to your health. Do not let a physician just tell you that you are over -stressed or burnt out. Ask questions, pry, and do not walk away if you are questioning your diagnosis. You know your body and pay attention to it.
