Fall is here! I love this season; not only for the sound of the leaves under my feet as I run, but the great comfort foods that come with the change in weather. Here in Minnesota we’ve already seen our share of snowflakes, but it’s fall nonetheless. My favorite food of the season is sweet potatoes. They are great sources of Vitamin A (which helps aid in vision, especially at night…though I wouldn’t recommend leaving your headlamp at home), as well as Vitamin C. Below are two delicious recipes that are sure to warm your body and soul on a brisk fall day. Like many dishes, they are especially good the day after.
Tis the season of MUD here in the Rockies. It is a state of Limbo where the trails are too muddy for mountain biking, hiking, and running, but there is not enough snow to break out the skis. The higher mountains become a bit unattainable. Life is so rough for us. What to do!
I developed a mantra during the descent that came to me from somewhere unknown… before each turn I would say to myself “like your life depends upon it” and then make a turn. “Like your life depends upon it”, turn. All the while we kept tabs on each other knowing that if anyone made a single mistake, they would be unrecognizable at the bottom of the Lhotse Face. Blowing an edge was not an option. We were like three climbers free soloing at a high level side by side, but in reality we were just three friends from Jackson Hole, Wyoming, doing what we love to do. The trust among us was palpable. When we finally crossed over the bergschrund after 2 hours, we screamed with joy and adrenaline. We all agreed that it was the most serious ski descent of our lives. -Kit DesLauriers. Mt. If these are not inspiring words than I don’t know what is. Our local bad ass lady has made the first female ski descent off of yes…Mt. Everest. For all of my years here in the Tetons Kit’s name has always coincided with some amazing mountaineering feat. Kit is an amazing woman and we all congratulate her. Here are a couple of links where you can read more about her Everest adventure.

Today was my last day of work on the Cosmic Apple Farm in Victor, Idaho. This is the Bio-dynamic Organic farm I have worked on for the past two growing seasons. Since last May we have been growing and harvesting beautiful food for our local community as a CSA. Today was quite a spiritual day on the farm. I felt incredibly close to the earth and the food that I eat. One might view my day as Ooogy Boogy Ju Ju while others will appreciate the energy and vitality which is the backbone of a healthy, bio-dynamic ecosystem. Both sides are correct. Spirituality and biological processes are both needed for a healthy organic farm.
Salt Lake City, Utah. The September Climb4Life hit some hills but kept on rolling. Though the weather cast some clouds over the city of Salt Lake, and socked in the surrounding mountains of the area, the clouds never cast a shadow over the psych of the event. The event will raise nearly $150,000, topping all other HERA events in history. In addition to the new heights of fundraising, the participants, volunteers and pro athletes all seemed to have a blast.
As a kid I would always shy away from people saying, “Let’s go to the Bronx Zoo. Aside from the scary notion of heading to the Bronx, I never wanted to see animals caged up. The idea always made me sad.
Now as an adult I have come to realize that Zoo’s do serve their purpose educationally in many ways. Therefore, yesterday I headed to the Bronx Zoo in New York for the first time with my family…the first time I have EVER gone to the zoo. Off we headed into the urban jungle of the Bronx to find an amazing oasis of life, beauty, and hope. Such a clashing of two worlds.
As we promised, here are a couple of responses from nutritional guru’s Andrea Reichert and Mary Howley Ryan on Rebecca Huntington’s blog about Pacing your Food.
When Scott pulled into our house last week towing a 20’ Balboa Sailboat, in a snow squall, I wondered how many neighbors were looking at us like we were crazy. A sailboat in the land locked Tetons? Most of our friends thought we were crazy when we told them we were looking to find a pocket cruiser sized sailboat to sail the local lakes. Sailboats are for the ocean, was the common response from our concerned friends.
