Amanda Riley, a womenspecific.com board woman, just slayed the field in the 2005 LOTOJA road race. As a response to my previous blog, Fun hating can be a tough job…but a noble one, Amanda replies with a great article on her definition of fun. You might find a few great tips on how to push through when conditions around you are as miserable as they can get.

LOTOJA, a 206 mile, one day bike race from Logan Utah to Jackson, Wyoming, couldn’t possibly have invited worse weather. It was exhilarating, challenging, miserable suffering. LOTOJA is torture enough in good weather. This year, it was pure masochism, a weather induced race of attrition.
So, I must confess…the first thing I did in my new Isis pants is climb up two sets of scaffolding, grab on to the rope as a hand line, and start roofing our straw bale home with my husband.
This past weekend I headed down to sunny Salt Lake City to get a bit of “working” play time in. I was fortunate to attend the 4th Annual HERA Cancer Climb for Life.
Finally…a valid excuse for my biking breakdowns. When I start bonking on the trail things can get really ugly. The rule of thumb when my boyfriend rides with me is: Wait until I yell out three “F” curses in a row before stopping to check if I am okay.

Have you ever been frustrated while exercising with your husband, boyfriend or male buddies because you seem to get hungry and/or thirsty before they do? It just seems like even though you are strong and fit they can go forever and not have to eat or drink. This can be very frustrating for female athletes and some assume this difference somehow reflects weakness. The reality is there are physiological reasons for this phenomenon and they are related to glycogen not weakness.

It is 8:30pm Saturday, Sept 10th, as I watch the remaining of approximately 1,000 racers of the Lotoja ride into Jackson Hole, Wyoming. It is dark and pouring rain, but they smile obliviously after completing a torturous day of riding 210 miles from Logan, Utah to Jackson, Wyoming. On the menu of weather for the day were 30-40 degree temperatures, rain, snow, and blowing winds.
YUMMY! You would think that bread bought from the freezer section would not be much good. WRONG! The organic sprouted grain products from Food For Life are awesome. The Cinnamon Raisin is my favorite for breakfast with either a bit of organic cream cheese or with some blackberry jam. This is a great substitute for traditional breads that contain milled flour.
If you live near the Tetons or would love to run in a race that stares directly at them, do not miss the First Annual Horseshoe Challenge. The First Annual Horseshoe Challenge 10K and 20K trail running race takes place on Saturday, September 17th. The heat is starting to subside and the trail running is on!
